GlassDharma - using less plastic, one straw at a time!

The first time I saw something about glass drinking straws, I thought "yeah right, when my child is Destructo?" Turns out I could not have been more wrong. The three straws we have are incredibly durable and my 2 year old who gnaws on everything, loves them, and more importantly has been unable to break them. And if she did, they come with a lifetime guarantee against breakage and will replace them. How can you go wrong?
The GlassDharma line was created by glassblower David Leonhardt in response to the wide misuse of plastics. Glass straws do not leach toxins into your drinks. Each use of a glass straw, means one less plastic one sitting in a landfill-so think of how many plastic straws you are not using by using the glass straws for the rest of your life. They are made from borosilicate tubing which is the strongest glass commercially available. They are dishwasher and microwave safe and can be using in cold or hot drinks. They are handmade in the United States. Each type of straw comes in different sizes from sipper, to one that can be used to drink bubble tea. You can get a simple straight straw, one with glass dots to stop it from rolling, and one with a bend. We have one of each in the 9.5 size, which is meant for iced tea etc., but we actually easily got it to work to drink out smoothies. You can see the thickness in the pics, compared to conventional plastic straws.

My daughter felt very grown-up sipping her Organic Strawberry Smoothie out of her Silikids glass using her new glass straws. mmmm...mmmm.mmmm she said and then threw the straw into the sink "to help" me clean up. I do not recommend throwing it into the sink, but I will say, it survived her throw. These straws are delightful and incredibly strong. It is all of these simple, yet important steps that help our world.

Organic Strawberry Smoothie Recipe:
Serves 4
1 Cup whole frozen organic strawberries
1 container (6 oz.) of fat free strawberry or plain yogurt (depending on how much sweetness you want)
1/2 cup low-fat milk
2 tablespoons honey (children under one should not have honey)

Put it all in the blender, close lid and blend on high speed until smooth...use your GlassDharma straw to drink up all of the goodness!

  2. I love these straws. :) Perfect for kids and adults. It's been dropped, thrown in the sink and even went through the washing machine (not recommended, but my kids put crazy things in the washer sometimes)
