We Got the Beat

Music is one of the biggest parts of my life. There was not a time I can remember growing up when there was not music, singing or a guitar playing in my home. As I got older, I enjoyed nothing more than coming home from college and dancing with my nephews in my sister's kitchen. I knew that I would want to give the gift of music enjoyment to my daughter as well. We love singing, dancing and being together. One of our favorite times to do this is while I cook and my daughter helps me. The book, All Together Singing in the Kitchen is the perfect helpmate for this.

Music is not only fun, but it’s also the foolproof way to family harmony and connection—it can soothe a crying baby, engage an active toddler, entertain during long car rides, and help everyone get through daily chores. In All Together Singing in the Kitchen you’ll find all the tools you need for family music making—you don’t need to know a thing about music to get started. With over thirty songs (with lyrics, chords, and audio recordings) to get you singing, musical games to get you dancing, and tips on playing instruments to get you grooving, this book will help you make music a larger part of your family’s life, from playtime to bedtime.

Making music with any group of people is one of the best and surest ways to forge deep emotional connections. Making music with the members of your family practically guarantees a lifetime of distinct, memorable, warm moments of togetherness.

My daughter is learning some sign-language at school and we love Three Craws which allows us to sing, while using our hands to express the song. ABC Song is another favorite. All Together Singing in the Kitchen is not just about music, it is about togetherness. It keeps us moving, having fun, and connecting with each other. My husband usually sits on the sidelines as giggles, but sometimes we get him to join in. Who can resist a singing, dancing four-year-old. This books and its ideas have helped brighten rainy days and stem tantrums at the start. The accompanying CD is great to take in the car too. Music really does make the world go round!

Blue Orange Games

We are a big fan of having a game night in our house. Game night could be anything from telling each other stories to building sculptures. It just means spending time together. My husband works, and I am a stay at home mom, so for him, watching her play games is a great way to show how she is developing and learning. I am constantly on the look-out for games that will be fun for all of us, while helping to educate our child. Zimbbos by Blue Orange, perfectly fits my criteria.
Refreshing and amusing, this stacking game can be played alone or team up with up to 4 players. Help those smiling little elephants to get piled up and create an originally shaped pyramid. Each player throws the die to find out how many elephants have to be placed on the pyramid, respecting the numerical order turn after turn. If the die shows a star, you get to chose between a joker (clown, bear, gorilla or a lion) or a balancing bar. You win if you place the elephant number 10 on the top of the pyramid and the pyramid stays up, it goes without saying.

We played for so long. I thought it was wonderful to try and get her to stack according to number. We even continued stacking them to see if we could get all of the pieces one on top of another, without having our "tower" fall. It was great fun. I love that the pieces are wood (no plastic in this game). I even caught my daughter using one of the elephants as a animal for another game. It got us together, and she was learning without even realizing it. Blue Orange games are so much fun, with choices for any age group. Blue Orange often wins coveted toy awards. They are an eco-friendly company, and they plant two trees for every tree used to create their wooden games. What's not to love?!
